Viskrings disappear in soil – watch the video

21 August 2023

Viskrings are our core product, they’re a plastic-free, home compostable and biodegradable alternative to traditional plastic heat shrink bands.

Our Viskrings are comprised of biodegradable cellulose fibres derived from wood pulp and obtained from natural renewable sources.

To demonstrate their eco-credentials we conducted a degradation study in our lab, by placing the Viskrings in soil and filming the results.

The bands began to degrade in as little as 2 weeks with the full process achieved within 4 months. This means the bands had fully degraded into the soil leaving no trace or impact on the soil itself.

Being biodegradable and compostable, Viskrings can be placed in home compost or food waste bins, decreasing the amount of single use plastic that ends up in landfill.

So now you can protect your product – and the planet.

The lifecycle of a Viskring

25 July 2023

The lifecycle of your biodegradable self-shrinking Viskrings can be categorised into 4 key life stages, continue reading to find out about the remarkable circle of life of your bands…

Stage 1: Start of life

  • The bands are born from Sycamore trees. Sycamore trees have a high cellulose content, so they are the perfect choice to produce the material needed to make your great biodegradable bands!
  • The wood from the Sycamore trees is ground down into cellulose sheets.
  • These cellulose sheets get broken down into a chemical called Viscose. This Viscose material is delivered to Viscose Closures HQ from our supplier ready to be turned into tamper evident self-shrinking cut bands.

Stage 2: Young life

  • Pigment is added to the Viscose to colour the material to your required colour. We offer colours such as white, black, red, blue and yellow to name a few.
  • This coloured material is then extruded into tube form and placed into acid to make regenerated cellulose.
  • Regenerated cellulose is pure cellulose with shorter chains. Having a shorter chain length means the material’s physical property behaves more like plastic (without actually being plastic) and so can be shaped easier into different forms such as sheets and fibres.
  • This regenerated material is then passed through a thorough wash process to ensure the material is clean.
  • Your clean material is then wound onto reels.
  • If you choose to take plain bands the material is cut into bands and perforated to your own requirements and specifications.
  • If you choose to take printed bands the material is printed on, then cut bands and perforated to your own requirements and specifications.
  • Your cut bands are then sealed in bags containing a solution that preserves the natural material of the bands. This solution is a non-toxic and not harmful. The bag containing your bands and solution is packed into tins and sealed shut, ensuring they are free from contamination.
  • Your orders are then delivered to you, our valued customers.

Stage 3: Prime of life

  • Your bands are delivered to you in tins which can be opened using a standard tin opener.
  • Simply remove the bands you need and hand apply to your container.
  • The bands self-shrink within an hour at room temperature, simply leave them to dry on your container where they will form a tight seal.
  • Re-seal any unused bands in their original solution following our storage guidelines and they can be used up to 12 months from the date of manufacture.
  • Once the bands are dry your product is tamper evident, and you’re ready to go!

Stage 4: End of life

  • Once your consumer removes the bands we recommend they place in their food waste bin, or home compost pile.
  • Our tests show that Viskrings biodegrade in soil within 4 months, returning to the earth from which they came, giving them the ability to repeat the process again and again.

How to choose the right size for your Cellulose Cut band (Viskring)

5 September 2020

Straight Sided Containers

Cellulose cut band (Viskring) sizing

Measure the widest point over which the seal must pass, then add 1mm. For example, if the diameter of the cap is 50mm you should choose a seal of 51mm diameter.

Choose a length to suit the purpose but remember the 10% shrinkage which takes place in this direction when the seal is fully dry

Conical Containers and More Complex Shapes

In these cases it is important that the difference between the smallest diameter and the largest diameter to be covered by the seal should not exceed 25%.

If you are not sure, you should send us a detailed drawing of the product you want to seal

Shrinkage on Drying

The seals are made from cellulose and are packed in a mild preservative solution. When you have placed the seal onto your product it dries naturally in the air and as it does so it shrinks down to form a tight seal.

The seals have a total transverse shrinkage of between 35-40%, i.e. it can shrink to two thirds of its original size. The longitudinal shrinkage is around 10%.

NOTE: For the most satisfactory appearance, you should choose a seal where the maximum transverse shrinkage required of it is 20-25%. If too large a seal is used the shrinkage time can be too long and there is a risk the finish will not be smooth.

Isle of Wight Distillery Case Study

Mermaid Gin bottles with shrink sleeves on them.

We completed a new customer case study in October with the great team at the Isle of Wight Distillery.

They needed packaging that supported their environmental goals, maintained the highest product integrity and could keep up with their growth plans – and this is where we came in!

Our PLA heat-shrink sleeves were the perfect option to maximise production time without compromising the Distillery’s sustainability goals and actions. PLA is derived from natural renewable sources and is industrially compostable. We partnered this with a beautiful Bartop crafted from wood and 100% natural cork finished with the elegant Mermaid Gin design.

A win for the Distillery, the planet and us!

Beach Clean

Swansea Bay - Caru Cymru Beach Clean

We’re very proud of our Welsh heritage and are very lucky to be based near some of, not only Wales’s, but Britain’s prettiest beaches.

Ensuring these beaches are litter-free is vital to protecting the surrounding environment and wildlife. Protecting the planet is a core principle of ours and so we decided to clean part of one of Swansea’s most popular beaches, Swansea Bay.

Viscose staff doing a beach clean on Swansea Bay

We completed our beach clean in partnership with local Welsh environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy. Our beach clean was carried out as part of their ‘Caru Cymru’ campaign which aims to eradicate litter and waste in Wales.

It’s common knowledge that fresh air and exercise are good for mental and physical health. So spending a couple of hours in the sun, getting some fresh air, and walking, all whilst doing it for a great cause was a lot of fun. We are proud of the team for the 10 bags worth of rubbish they collected, so it only seemed right to reward everyone with an ice cream at the end too!

Viscose staff member Deidre Titchener

Staff profile: Deirdre Titchener

This month we spoke to Deirdre Titchener who is a Process Operator, involved in making your shrink sleeves & samples. She has worked at Viscose for 32 years, meaning she is one of our longest serving members of staff! Deirdre even worked at our current factory location before it became Viscose.

A typical working day for Deirdre is working in the heat shrink sleeve department of our business. Here she rotates on the various machines, all of which she has gotten to know well over the last 32 years, including our preform lines, where she helps make our open top capsules and on our cutting machines. Deirdre is our resident sample expert for heat shrink film – nearly all of our customer samples are made by Deirdre’s hand. She loves making your samples, as she enjoys the precision of sample making not to mention all the unique sizes she makes for various caps and containers.

Deirdre believes that her enjoyment for making samples and all the precision needed to make them, comes from her love of sewing. Outside of work she’s a keen sewer and regularly does alterations for family and friends clothing. She’s also an avid reader and traveller, Turkey and Cuba are her favourite places she has visited so far! She’s a keen follower of horse racing and attends the Cheltenham Gold Cup every year. She also has a dog, Bailey, who is a Yorkshire terrier cross Bichon Frisê.

Deirdre also shared some interesting facts about herself with us – She comes from a large family and is 1 of 9 siblings! She has also met Margaret Thatcher and participated in a charity muddy fun run as part of the Viscose Vixens team!

We asked Deirdre to tell us what she likes about working at Viscose:

“I love working at Viscose and always have done, we’re a tight knit community, where everyone is helpful and approachable and I’m grateful to have made close friends for life. I also find my job interesting and appreciate the importance of tamper evidence.”

Thanks Deirdre, for your time with us for this edition.

Get Set For Summer! Artisan ice cream makers whipping up a storm

7 February 2023

Get Set For Summer! Artisan ice cream makers whipping up a storm, featured image

Film Tubing, five coloured reelsIt may only be February, but we’re already thinking about warmer times, beaches and ice cream! And looking ahead is even more important if you’re one of the 701 ice cream manufacturers based in the UK.

Although a year-round treat, ice cream has become a firm summertime favourite with the British public, whether that’s a Mr Whippy from an ice cream truck, an individual pot perfect for a solo picnic, or a family-sized sharing tub emerging for sunny garden days. Our love for the frozen fancy is showing no signs of slowing, with 222 new artisan ice cream companies being created since 2020 alone! And it’s no wonder frozen dessert manufacturing is expanding; on average, we ate 107g of ice cream per person per week last year. As a nation, that’s more than 147,000,000kg!

We love the large brands and supermarkets’ own labels, but we can’t get enough of the
independent producers. The artisans who have turned a passion for pudding into a moneymaking enterprise. The connoisseurs who have created a scrumptiously unique tasting product and want to share it with the country. But selling their ice cream goes much further than crafting the consummate creamy creation, they need to consider how to package, protect and seal their product so it reaches the consumer in the perfect condition it was intended.

Securing the ice cream keeps the product intact and reassures the customer it is tamper free. Ice cream pioneers can choose from several options to complete their product including cellulose bands, film cut and preformed bands and film tubing – each offering distinct benefits. For those eco-conscious gelato innovators, cellulose bands are the only biodegradable, home compostable and plastic free tamper evident band available. They can be hand applied meaning independent traders needn’t splash out on expensive machinery to fit them. The bands can be personalised to suit the product and its branding, creating an exterior as individual as the contents.

Film cut and preformed bands are the most commonly used plastic film bands and the most economical option. They too boast bespoke abilities to blend in with your brand. Film tubing is more suited for larger manufacturers who are producing high volume and have the capacity to apply with machinery and want to cut packaging time.

Viscose has been manufacturing tamper proof film bands for ice cream and frozen desserts for decades and we pride ourselves on developing a partnership approach. We are adept at working with artisan producers stepping into the commercial world for the first time, or those who are seasoned manufacturers. A dedicated Account Manager supports companies from the design stage, through to testing and line trials. As well as ice cream, our popular artisan ranges include gin, jam, chutney, sauces, home baking and organic cosmetics.

The most popular containers for artisans in 2023… and how to seal them securely

30 January 2023

The most popular containers for artisans in 2023, featured image

Beverages Sector, circular image altAs a UK manufacturer, we love supporting our fellow British producers including artisan businesses who are often starting out on their corporate ventures, crafting products through traditional methods and boosting the local economy.

We work closely with artisans, taking our customers on a journey and developing a partnership approach to support projects from the design stage through to testing and line trials. As part of this process, we help producers find the best way to securely seal their containers.

The most popular containers for artisans are usually made of glass. From craft brewers and distillers pouring their liquid magic into bottles, to bakers and chefs storing their jams, chutneys, sauces and other sweet treats into jars, glass is historically the go-to for artisans and this packaging trend is set to continue its dominance in 2023.

Glass has many benefits as a container: sturdy, aesthetically pleasing, recyclable and excellent at content preservation when sealed. We regularly supply Viskrings and film tamper evidence solutions as secondary seals to help deter tampering and prevent contamination, providing a visual assurance to customers that their product is exactly as their artisan producer intended.

Moving away from food and drink and into the world of organic cosmetics, plastic is still playing a role, though eco-conscious and clean beauty producers are increasingly moving towards more recycled plastic content where possible for their containers.

Again, film tubing and Viskrings, a plastic free solution, are the tamper evidence solutions of choice for the artisan beauty community. These solutions can be easily applied and moulded to containers of most shapes and sizes, excluding opportunities for these organic and natural cosmetics to be contaminated.

Why tamper evident solutions are an increasingly important part of the supply chain

Food Sector circular imageFor artisan producers, creating a first rate, uncompromised product is paramount and choosing the right packaging solution to maintain its integrity is crucial.

The container should be practical, holding the product in place while allowing the user to easily access the contents upon purchasing. It should be practical and clearly show what’s inside, with all necessary ingredients and allergy information visible in keeping with the brand identity. But above all else, the vessel should protect the product and comprise a visual tamper proof closure to prove to customers that their products are secure and free from contamination – fresh from the manufacturer!

There are many options an artisan producer can choose to safeguard their creation depending on their field. For jars and tubs, there are cellulose bands, film cut bands and film tubing, and for bottled liquid products, producers can pick from a range of capsules, each suited to different needs.

Tamper proof bands and capsules can be adapted for its designated product – whether that’s a multicoloured finish to fit in with the branding or the company’s logo emblazoned on them for that oh-so personal touch. They can be applied with heat or machinery to suit the manufacturer’s capabilities and are supplied with perforations or tear strips for easy opening.

At Viscose Closures, we have a trusted history of working with regional, national and global artisan producers. No matter the size of your business, if you have a product you want to protect, get in touch!

OUR HEAT SENSITIVE SOLUTION FOR THE INDUSTRIAL GAS INDUSTRY

Viscose has been manufacturing tamper evident seals for over 125 years and are proud to work with many of the world’s leading gas companies.

We’re a trusted supplier to the gas industry and are listed in the Gasworld directory, proof that you can trust us to protect your sensitive gas cannister and equipment.

A key issue in the gas industry is monitoring full vs empty cannisters, they cannot be weighed to tell the difference, so a visual way of checking is needed. Without this, empty cannisters end up being transported through the system which is a costly process.

The problem is, traditional packaging solutions such as heat-shrink sleeves require heat application to seal the cannisters. This is often not ideal specifically because gas and other flammable liquids, components and chemicals are extremely heat sensitive and applying heat to seal them can be dangerous.

This is where we can help…

INTRODUCING OUR HEAT-FREE TAMPER EVIDENT SOLUTION; VISKRINGS.

Our Viskrings are hand applied and self-shrinking without the need for heat meaning you simply place them over your container / cannister, and they shrink naturally forming a tight seal.

They provide a quick and easy visual check to ensure only full cannisters are in rotation. Not only are they heat-free, but they are also biodegradable, home compostable and plastic-free. So, by using these tamper evident sleeves not only will you be using a safe product, you’ll also be protecting the planet.

So why not seal and protect your gas containers with Viskrings today?

Pharmaceutical

Our Heat Sensitive Solution for the Pharmaceutical industry

Viscose has been manufacturing tamper evident solutions to major industries including the pharmaceutical industry for over 125 years.

We are proud to work with NHS & private trusts, hospitals, clinical testing facilities and globally recognised pharmaceutical brands. Our ‘Sterile Until Open’ printed sleeves are a favourite in the pharmaceutical world, namely with our NHS customers.

Tamper evidence is globally recognised by healthcare providers and specialists as a cost-effective solution to protect containers like vials, petri dishes and sample bottles from contamination ensuring the integrity of their contents.

Traditional solutions such as heat-shrink sleeves or bands require heat to shrink the bands onto the container – but what if you have heat sensitive contents? Or need a solution that can be hand applied on the go without any machinery?

This is where we can help- introducing our heat-free tamper evident solution; Viskrings.

Our Viskrings are hand applied and self-shrinking forming a tight seal over your container protecting against contamination. They are perfect for the pharmaceutical industry, namely because live specimens, cultures and bacteria are heat sensitive and applying heat to seal them may affect their integrity.

Not only are they heat-free, they’re also biodegradable, home compostable, and plastic-free. So, by using these tamper evident sleeves not only will you be protecting your product you’ll also be protecting the planet.

Water, water all around – Why the hospitality sector seals its tap water

23 November 2022

Water, water all around
Beverages Sector, circular image alt

“Can we have some water for the table please?” – We’ve all said it before at a restaurant or hotel. Whether you are the driver, sober or just want something refreshing alongside your soft or alcoholic beverage, water is the go-to drink.

In the hospitality sector, bars, restaurants and hotels have a choice: providing branded bottled water or their own tap water in customised bottles or dispensers.

Many hospitality businesses are now turning to bottling their tap water in house, using filtration systems to ensure great-tasting, fresh water for their customers. Bottling and sealing water in house helps businesses to save on delivery costs, storage space and single-use bottles, so altogether better for the environment too!

As a major supplier to the sector, we at Viscose Closures assist restaurants and hotels through the process. In addition to supplying caps and closures, we also supply tamper evidence solutions like our eco-friendly Viskrings which provide reassurance to guests that they are opening a sterilised product free from contamination and tampering.

Made from cellulose, the Viskring can shrink up to 30% of its original size. They require no machinery or heat to apply, easily mould to challenging shapes and can be applied by hand to a number of drinking vessels including plastic, glass, metal and china. The result? A secure seal with a high-quality finish that would impress fine diners!

Biodegradable and compostable, Viskrings can also be easily disposed of after use in an environmentally friendly way.

What a refreshing solution for the hospitality sector!

Clean Beauty – inside and out

15 November 2022

Health, Vitamins & Cosmetics Sector circular image

Have you heard the term ‘clean beauty’? It goes beyond achieving a clear complexion and glowing skin. It looks at what the cosmetics are made of, where the ingredients are sourced and how the product was manufactured. A clean beauty product has been created without ingredients that might cause health effects; elements that have been ethically sourced and are cruelty-free; and packaging that is renewable. For the ever-increasing eco-conscious consumer, buying environmentally friendly products they can build into their everyday beauty and health routines is paramount. Clean beauty is not just what goes into the product, but ONTO the product as well – and that means the bottle tops, screw caps and capsule lids. That’s where we come in.

Viscose has been manufacturing in the UK for over 125 years, and is one of the top suppliers of security seals for the beauty and cosmetic sector and natural and botanical health industry. Throughout our long history, we have evolved with the changing attitudes around climate change and have adapted our offering accordingly. Sustainability has always been at the heart of our business, now more than ever, and we are always researching and developing new ways to improve our recycled content levels.

For companies in the health and beauty sector wanting to become ‘clean’, we offer a distinctive range of compostable cellulose bands, which provide your product with the reassuring visual tamper evident proof needed and can be printed in colours to match your brand. No plastic. No unnecessary waste. No problem!

We also offer PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) and PLA (Polylactic Acid) options. PET is an eco-friendlier version of the commonly used PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) and is widely recycled, while PVC is a premium material derived from renewable resources and is classed as compostable.

Ask us about our eco-options for protecting your products today, and find out more about how we serve the health and beauty sector.

Natural Product – Natural Packaging

Viscose has been supplying visual security seals for beauty and cosmetic products as well as the natural and botanical health industry for years. More recently, the industry has been turning to sustainable, ethically-sourced ingredients and eco-packaging as consumers aim to do their bit to help fight climate change. A recent report by Provenance found that nine in ten people in the UK prioritise sustainability when selecting which beauty and wellness products to buy. Factors include ethics such as cruelty-free, organic and Fairtrade, alongside the amount of waste produced preferring items that use recyclable or compostable packaging.

At Viscose, sustainability has always been an integral part of our business and we are constantly driving innovation to build on our eco ethos and improve our recycled content levels. For beauty and health brands looking to keep pace with the green demands, look no further than our cellulose bands which are biodegradable, home compostable and completely plastic free.

The bands, which are made from wood pulp, can fit a whole host of containers including lipstick, foundation, mascara, nail polish and moisturisers, as well as vitamin and vape capsules.

The cellulose can either be printed in colours to match your style or we also offer bespoke branded print.

Whether you’re an established environmentally conscious beauty brand, or an artisan producer looking to become more eco-friendly, get in touch or find out more how we service the health, vitamin and cosmetics sectors.

Protection and reassurance is key: How the industrial gas sector is reassuring customers of product security

14 October 2022

Visual tamper evident solutions help businesses reassure their customers that their products are secure, free from contamination and intact. Perhaps, one of the sectors this is most important for is the industrial gas sector.

Oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen and helium are among the gases manufactured for use in industry and are used far beyond the chemical plants that produce them. Did you know that industrial gases are used in food processing,
electronics, aerosols and pharmaceuticals to name a few?

Industrial gases can be volatile and therefore it is extremely important for their contents to be sealed and protected at the point of production and arrive with customers visibly intact. So, what is the solution for these potentially reactive products that need to be stored and moved safely?

Our unique Viskrings are a the perfect option. Made from cellulose, a natural plant- based material extruded from wood pulp, the bands are easily hand applied and don’t require heat in order to shrink onto your product. In addition to being a heat and machinery free solution that won’t affect the gases inside, Viskrings have the added bonus of being biodegradable, home compostable and plastic free.

Visually, customers can see that their product has been protected and, as the bands can be printed in colour, are able to comply with legislative colour coding. Printed cellulose is available in red, orange, yellow, blue, green, black and white as well as transparent.

Cut and pre-formed film bands and film tubing are also among the solutions for this sector, providing a transparent, visual seal for the customer while adding an extra layer of security.

So once your business has chosen the solution, you can be secured, sealed and ready to go!

At Viscose Closures, we have a trusted history of supplying the industrial gas sector and work with some of the most recognised global brands. Our most popular ranges include gas canisters, chemical canisters, chemical vats and sensor covers.

Find out more about our work in the industrial and gas sector.

Supporting the gas industry one seal at a time

We’re proud to be a major supplier of tamper evident solutions to the industrial and bottled gas sector. The industry – as you would expect – has very strict regulations when it comes to packaging, security and transportation.

Our role, in the delicate journey of bottling, packaging and transporting the gas to its final destination, is ensuring the contents remain in the vessel and can’t escape or be released until they are scheduled to do so.

We work with some of the most recognised global brands; manufacturing and supplying specific seals for pressurised and flammable gas canisters, chemical canisters, chemical vats and sensor covers. Whether these are from our vast range of high-end seals or bespoke products designed to suit specific requirements, we offer a dedicated Account Manager for every customer to support each project from the design stage through to testing and line trials.

Gas canisters can be incredibly volatile, especially if they contain highly pressurised or flammable gas. Our unique cellulose cut bands – including viskrings and celons – are one of our most popular options for tamper evidence in the gas sector as they can be easily hand applied, crucially, without the need for heat.

In keeping with our sustainable ethos and that of the environmentally conscious brands we work with, these tamper evident bands are biodegradable, home compostable and plastic free. We create them here in the UK from wood pulp taken from renewable sources that is pressed into tubing and then cut into bands.

Customers can choose the colour of the final product, or it can be branded for a completely personal and professional look. Not sure about viskrings? We also offer film cut and pre-formed bands and film tubing for use on canisters.

Significance of a Seal in the Pharmaceutical Sector

21 September 2022

Significance of a Seal in the Pharmaceutical Sector. featured
Significance of a Seal in the Pharmaceutical Sector

All tamper evident solutions are critical, but especially in the pharmaceutical industry. Medicines, ointments and tablets all need a visible anti-tampering security element to prove the contents have not been interfered with or damaged and are genuine products.

Viscose has a trusted history of supplying the pharmaceutical, scientific and medical testing sector with tamper proof closures. We work with some of the most recognised global brands, with product ranges including medicines, medical gas canisters, eye drops, tinctures, antiseptic gels and hand sanitizer as well as numerous other products that need identification and protection globally.

Key to pharmaceutical solutions is efficiency, flexibility and durability. The seal must withstand being transported and clearly show if any attempt is made to open. It must also be subtle so as not to conceal any of the vital content information.

Viscose Closures is a packaging supplier specialising in tamper evidence solutions for your containers.

We manufacture a range of heat shrink packaging in a variety of substrates for use in most market sectors.

Viscose also manufactures capsules and shrink sleeves in PVC and PET as a secondary tamper evidence seal used in a wide range of packaging.

Sustainability has always been an integral part of our business and we are constantly driving innovation to improve
our recycled content levels. Our Viskrings are a unique plastic-free tamper seal option made from Cellulose, which is biodegradable and home compostable. Providing greater packaging safety and transparency for our clients and their
customers is paramount.

Viscose also supplies plastic closures including sports and flat caps; aluminium closures, crowns, aluminium ROPPs corks and bartops to suit most standard bottles.

Our extensive range of closures is suitable for food, beverages, consumer products and industrial packaging in a wide range of materials.

Renowned for our exceptional customer service, we pride ourselves on providing tailored solutions to a wide selection of customers from small artisan companies starting their journey to large global brands. Our friendly, dedicated team recognise the value in working in partnership with our customers and therefore offer expert technical advice, bespoke equipment and on site support.

We already work with many contract packers, providing total solutions all under one roof and will be
happy to chat through how we can support your business.

  • Sleeving or bands can be produced on a reel for automatic application or as pre-cut sleeves/bands or preformed bands for hand application
  • Preforms are cut bands which have been formed into a shape by shrinking them on to a mould
  • Preforms make it easier for your production team to apply sleeves by hand and to obtain a superior finish.
  • Products need heat to shrink either by a heat tunnel or heat gun which Viscose can supply
  • Single or multiple lines of perforations can be introduced either vertically or horizontally to make sleeves easier to remove or more susceptible to damage if tampered with
  • Coloured, printed or holographic tear strips can be affixed or preforms in a vertical orientation and can be used in combination with perforations to provide an effective easy-open feature to the pack.

We are delighted to offer technical expertise enabling you to have a seamless transition and on-boarding process.
